Scott joins Air Force in social media movement Published Sept. 30, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Amber Kelly-Herard 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott AFB has joined the Air Force in its effort to reach out to target audiences through social media sites such as Facebook, Blogspot and Twitter. "Social media opens up channels of communication that the military traditionally hasn't been able to use," said Rebekah Clark, Air Mobility Command Public Affairs. "Not only are we able to communicate our message to the (public), but we're also able to engage in one-on-one conversations with Airmen regardless of rank or location." The Air Force Public Affairs Agency, which is leading the engagement strategy, says most people now use the Internet as a primary communications tool, making every Airman a communicator. This is one reason why the Air Force is doing more than ever to offer these venues and encourage Airmen to participate. Several Air Force agencies such as the Air Force Recruiting Service and the Air Force Academy use social media sites to show younger generations what the Air Force is doing. Senior leaders such as Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Adm. James Stavridis, commander of U.S. European Command, also communicate via social media sites to share about their travels and experiences. Airmen are also able to use the Air Force Live Blog to communicate their Air Force experiences with others. According to the AFPAA, these communication techniques are "geared to communicating in the 21st century and beyond. We're only scratching the surface, but Airmen should expect much, much more in the future." Scott's social media sites were created and are monitored by the 375th AMW Public Affairs office.
