Scott commander holds vehicle safety all call Published Oct. 28, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Amber Kelly-Herard 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Two weekends ago a 21-year-old Air Mobility Command senior airman died in a motorcycle crash while going too fast around a curve. During the same weekend a car accident killed two more AMC Airmen, ages 19 and 24, and a 22-year-old civilian who recently separated from the Air Force. All three were ejected from the vehicle. "These Airmen were part of our Air Force family," said Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander. "Everybody counts and everybody is significant. Nobody can be replaced." Due to the sudden loss of four Airmen during a short time, Colonel Goldstone held an unprecedented safety commander's call for all wing Airmen to remind them of their responsibilities of being a safe driver. Most of the Air Force traffic fatalities involve the common factors of Fatigue, Alcohol use, Seatbelt not worn and Too much speed; or F.A.S.T. Colonel Goldstone reminded Team Scott of the consequences of misconduct, and said safe driving is everyone's responsibility. He said it is the driver's responsibility to have a plan and a back-up plan. It is the passenger's responsibility to say something. It is the Wingman's responsibility to do something. Think before you get in the car. In closing, Colonel Goldstone said, "Thank you for what you do and for making Scott the Showcase Wing and by Enabling Combat Power. Don't do the job for the enemy by killing ourselves. Enjoy the weather and the holidays."
