Santa Claus lands at Scott’s Youth Center Published Dec. 9, 2009 By Steve Berry 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- When Santa Claus visited the Youth Center Saturday morning he brought a positive message to children, and left with their Christmas wishes. St. Nick was at Scott for Breakfast with Santa, which featured food, games and knee-time with the man in the red suit. Karen Jalbert, Youth Program Coordinator, said the breakfast is an annual event. "This year we have focused more on how kids themselves become those who bring joy and cheer to the world," she said. After visiting with Santa, each child was given a Santa hat and a "Santa's official helper" card that held a positive message from Santa encouraging the child "to spread happiness, peace and joy," be obedient, friendly, and remember those who are deployed and the less fortunate. Before Santa arrived at the Youth Center, families ate a full, hot breakfast and then a line formed to get into the gym where Santa was expected. Shelby Maricle, 6, and her mother Sarah were near the front of the line. Shelby said she planned to ask Santa for a Rapunzel doll, roller skates, a scooter and Moon Sand. Her sister Hannah, 14, was volunteering at the event with other members of the Keystone and Torch Clubs. Their father is Tech. Sgt. Richard Maricle, who works at Air Mobility Command. When Santa appeared in the hall, the children waiting in line were all smiles and wide-eyed. Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander, and Mary Goldstone, said seeing the expressions on the children's faces was the best part of the season and the event Saturday morning. "Seeing the kids is the best part because their faces light up," Mary Goldstone said. Colonel Goldstone added, "It's great to see the magic and enchantment in their eyes. Thank you to everyone who goes out of their way to volunteer at events like this during the holiday season." The next opportunity to visit with Santa is Friday during "Book n' Bowl" at the Stars and Strikes Bowling Center, followed by Brunch with Santa Dec. 20 at the Scott Club. The events are associated with the Year of the Air Force Family.
