Recycling services expanded to meet growing demand

To accommodate the greater amount of material residents recycle each month, some changes in recycling and bulk pick up in base housing have been implemented.
Community containers and extra containers have been added in Patriot's and Lincoln's Landings and pickup service has been expanded from two to three pickups per week.
Other changes are as follows:

New Containers: New containers have sliding openings.

Location: Once new containers are delivered, the recycling area in Patriot's Landing will be moved to the asphalt pad next to the tennis court near the closed gate on George Washington. Patriot's and Lincoln's Landings recycling areas will be fenced to shield the area and contain debris. Do not leave items outside the recycle containers or deposit non-recyclable items in the recycling containers.

Bulk items: Items too large to fit in the household trash bins, such as furniture, may be discarded at the bulk dumpster located at the maintenance building at any time.

Appliances, oil and other lubricating fluids, tires and car batteries: These items may not be disposed of in the bulk dumpster, nor are recyclable services available on base for those items. For proper disposal, take these items to the retailer where they were purchased, or to an off base recycling center that receives those items.

Appliances: To schedule an appointment to remove an old appliance, call 746-4911. A $35 fee applies per appliance.

Household trash: Everyday trash should be bagged, placed in the wheeled bin and set out for collection on Mondays. The trash company picks up on most Monday holidays except two: trash will be collected on the day following Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Yard waste: Pick up will begin in March, depending on the weather. Please place yard waste in the provided container or in paper yard waste bags available at Self Help or from local retailers. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

Boxes: Break down all boxes. Should a box be full of materials, discard the materials properly, then break down the box and add it to the recycling container.

Community recycling containers: It's not necessary to sort recyclable items before disposing of them in community recycling containers.

Non-recyclables: Styrofoam and plastic bags are not recyclable at this time. Plastic play structures and furniture items are never recyclable.

Inappropriate dumping: Dumping items in areas other than those designated is illegal. If you witness an instance of illegal dumping on base, and provide photographic evidence identifying the illegal dumper, you may be eligible for a reward. Illegal dumpers will be fined a minimum of $250 per occurrence.

Efforts of residents to recycle are appreciated. Please call Hunt Development Group at 746-4911 with questions or concerns.

Scott Recycling Collection Center
Scott's Recycling Collection Center handles over 135,000 pounds of recyclables a month and is open for the entire base population to use.

The center operates a self-service collection area, with drive-up access to the numerous recycling bins organized by the type of recyclable material they contain. At this site, customers can drop off recyclables into designated containers Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drop off location is closed during all federal holidays.

Recyclables accepted include: newspaper, magazines, junk mail, white paper, mixed paper, cardboard (including cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and similar boxes), plastics (excluding plastic bags), glass bottles, aluminum, steel/tin cans, and all types of metal. Appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and stoves are also accepted, but customers should call the center at 256-6431 before bringing in the item.

Customers should sort and place recyclable materials in the appropriate bins at the collection center, and also ensure that they do not place recyclables outside the gate when the collection center is not open.

Items not accepted include: yard waste, styrofoam, bubble wrap, mattresses, wood, paper towels/tissues, plate glass/fine china, batteries, tires, paint or paint cans, oily rags, oil cans, gas cans, propane tanks, TVs, microwaves, computers or monitors, food products or regular trash.

The recycling collection center is located at 34020 New Mexico Street on the south side of base. To get to the center, customers coming from the Shiloh Gate should make a left on East Winters Drive, continue on South Drive, make a right on Illinois Street, a left onto Nebraska Street, a right on Indiana Street and a right on New Mexico Street.
