Arts and Crafts Center celebrating craft month Published March 17, 2010 By Senior Airman Andrew Davis 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- From acrylic painting to sewing curtains, the Scott Arts and Crafts Center has one of the most diverse class schedules in the Air Force, and with National Craft Month in full swing, the center is encouraging Team Scott to bring their unfinished art projects to the center. "National Craft Month is the perfect time to pull out those unfinished projects, finish them, then move on to new ideas," said Gary Olds, program coordinator. "March can be your time to put those art and craft ideas into motion." At the end of March, the Arts and Craft Center will host a craft fair, featuring 30 different projects highlighting the classes they offer. Bill Armstrong, Arts and Craft Center director said, "There will be a number of classes showcased including wood carving, Japanese cuisine, sewing, quilting and stain glass. It will be mainly instructors doing the demos with a number of hands on presentations. "One of the most interactive demonstrations will be the stamping demo," said Mr. Armstrong. "The instructor will have various stamps that people can use to make and decorate a card." In addition to the craft fair, the center will host a number of promotions throughout the month. Mr. Olds said, "Throughout March, look for special sales in our engraving, framing, and auto shops. In addition, there will be free craft demonstrations in the Base Exchange lobby. Watch for coupons with special class rates and save on special hourly shop rates." Mr. Armstrong said the center features a number of distinctive programs and classes. "The Arts and Crafts Center here is unique in relation to the majority of the centers around the Air Force," he said. "We offer 30 different classes a month, in a wide range of subjects, compared to a couple a month at a typical base." The instructors come from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds and are on hand to help beginners to experts. "The majority of the instructors are local business owners or teachers from the local universities," said Mr. Armstrong. "They are all volunteers who come out to do this to give back to the troops and their families." The Arts and Crafts Fair will be held March 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arts and Crafts Center.
