Scott Air Force Base personnel and leadership gathered Friday afternoon at the Global Reach Planning Center to kick-off the "Hurts One, Affects All" campaign.

The Department of Defense-wide campaign focuses on increasing awareness and preventing sexual assault. At Scott, "Hurts One, Affects All" also focuses on child and alcohol abuse awareness and prevention.

Pamela Dorsey, Scott's sexual assault response coordinator, said the campaign is called "Hurts One, Affects All," because, "when one person is sexually assaulted, or a child is abused, or a family is impacted by alcohol abuse, then all are affected--including the mission."

The kick-off event Friday featured an informative skit, and speech by Col. Stephen Oliver, on his last day as 375th Air Mobility Wing vice commander.

The skit demonstrated how issues may surface, and their effects on the mission and personal lives of Airmen.

After the skit, Colonel Oliver delivered the keynote speech. As vice commander, he was the installation sexual assault program director and the chair of the Central Registry Board, which deals with physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and domestic violence within the military and among military families.

Colonel Oliver said the three issues of "Hurts One, Affects All"--sexual assault, child abuse and alcohol abuse--are connected, and listed supporting statistics.

"The bottom line is that we as leaders cannot and must not tolerate this behavior in our military communities," he said.

In addition, Colonel Oliver said the Air Force's sexual assault response efforts are very good, but the institution needs to increase its prevention efforts.

"The good news is, I believe we have turned the corner. I sincerely do," he said. "We have begun and continue to make significant progress in the prevention of sexual assault, child abuse and alcohol abuse."

Colonel Oliver said he is optimistic about prevention because the Air Force now has three key things: the commitment of Air Force leaders, a "robust and mature" Integrated Delivery System, and the Air Force is giving Integrated Delivery System new tools, such as the sexual assault bystander intervention training.

After Colonel Oliver spoke, partnering agencies signed a proclamation in support of the "Hurts One, Affects All" campaign.

Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th AMW commander, closed the ceremony.

"I look at this and reflect on what we are trying to do here," he said. "What we are really trying to do is take care of our family, and when I say family I include every one of our services, and every family member here at the installation."

Colonel Goldstone added that supporting agencies at Scott, such as the Airman and Family Readiness Center, strive to help military members from all service branches.
