Scott AFB celebrating Earth Week Published April 14, 2010 By 375th Conservation Management Office 375th Air Mobility Wing SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- April 19-23 is Earth Week at Scott Air Force Base, which will feature environmental, recycling, energy, and Clean Water Act activities, with an Arbor Day event April 22. The purpose of Earth Week is to encourage everyone to do their part to enhance the environment, recycle, conserve energy and keep waterways clean. From Monday through Friday there will be Earth Week displays in the lobbies of the Base Exchange and the Base Library. Environmental, recycling, energy and Clean Water Act information will be available. Scott Elementary School actively participates each year in Earth Week activities on base, and held a poster contest for the fourth and fifth graders. This year's Earth Week poster winner is Monet Penson, a fifth grader. Other school activities include a recycling contest, an environmental art project, storm drain marking. Elementary school students will participate in an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony April 22, 2 p.m., at the Patriots Landing Youth Center. The event will recognize Scott as a Tree City USA recipient for the 17th consecutive year, and as a first-time recipient of the 2009 Growth Award for excelling in education, partnership, planning, management and tree planting. The ceremony will be officiated by Col. Kevin Webb, 375th Air Mobility Wing vice commander. All base personnel are invited to attend. In the event of inclement weather, the tree planting that day will be cancelled. Earth Week will conclude with a base-wide cleanup day April 23.
