Free self defense class available to Scott women Published May 19, 2010 By Senior Airman Samantha S. Crane 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The Scott AFB Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program will partner with the Southwestern Illinois College Police Department to provide the women of Scott AFB a free rape aggression defense class. Open to female active duty, retiree, Department of Defense civilians and family members 13 years or older, the class is scheduled for June 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rockwell Hall on base. "Contrary to what people think, Rape Aggression Defense, RAD, is not a class where we (certified instructors) instruct the participants on how to 'take out' the aggressor," said Pamela Dorsey, Installation Sexual Assault Response Coordinator. "The reality is, in most cases the aggressor may be bigger and stronger than the person they have targeted to assault. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of RAD as stated in the course objective is 'to develop and enhance the options of self defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.'" The maximum class size is 30 with a registration deadline of June 3. "Join us to become better equipped on how to effectively respond if ever put in this situation," said Ms. Dorsey, "you'll be glad you did!"
