Military, civilian forces celebrate Police Week Published May 19, 2010 By Senior Airman Andrew Davis 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Team Scott celebrated National Police Week May 9 through 15 with numerous events on and off base to honor security forces Airmen as well as civilian law enforcement officials around the nation. Members of the 375th and 126th Security Force Squadrons, and local area police departments teamed up to celebrate the week and a number of firsts. "Here at Scott, we remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty by attending the Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service at the St. Clair County Jail," said Staff Sgt. Cynthia Taylor, 375th SFS. "This year was the first year Security Forces has recognized the fallen defenders who have given their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom at the memorial service." New to this year's events at Scott was the addition of local law enforcement agencies. "This year, we also brought the local law enforcement together with us by inviting them to attend a Police Chief Breakfast, ribbon cutting ceremony at our new facility, and our annual police display at the Base Exchange," said Sergeant Taylor. "Throughout the week activities were planned to also try to bring the unit together and celebrate our accomplishments and dedication. Participating in numerous events with them provided a sense of camaraderie to civilian and military police officers." National Police week was enacted in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as "Police Week" according to the National Police Week website. "Working with the local police departments throughout this week has been amazing," said Sergeant Taylor. "We work with each and every local department in one way or another by assisting in an incident off-base or working with them with the civilian personnel we have on base. This week allows us to still maintain that professional partnership we have and to celebrate all of the hard work we do each day."
