Scott Airmen keep vehicles running in Afghanistan Published May 26, 2010 By Nuristan Provincial Reconstruction Team Public Affairs Nuristan PRT NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan -- Staff Sgts. Kyle Salyer and Jonathan Weiman, both assigned to the 375th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Scott Air Force Base, are currently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The sergeants are vehicle mechanics with Provincial Reconstruction Team Nuristan at Forward Operating Base Kala Gush. Their shop is responsible for the maintenance of more than $11 million in vehicles including the unit's fleet of High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, and Mine-resistant, Ambush-Protected All-terrain Vehicles, or M-ATVs. They also maintain generators, forklifts and other equipment. These vehicles transport PRT members and equipment to and from destinations within Nuristan to help rebuild the region. PRTs are task-oriented civil-military organizations assigned throughout Afghanistan. PRT Nuristan is made up of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of State, Department of Agriculture and the United States Agency for International Development. In addition to working in a joint and inter-agency environment, members of the PRT work side-by-side with the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. Members of PRT Nuristan work closely with the provincial government, nine district governments, and local leaders to achieve three main objectives: to enhance security, facilitate economic and infrastructure development and extend the reach of the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The capabilities provided by sergeants Salyer and Weiman service will help the unit create the conditions for effective local governance, a growing economy, and a stable environment throughout the province. The goal of the team is to build Nuristan's governing capacity to respond effectively to the full spectrum of the population's needs.
