New commander takes charge of Scott’s CAP squadron Published July 14, 2010 By CAP Civil Air Patrol SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Maj. Carol Hertel took command July 1 of the Scott Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol. Col. Gordon Larson, commander of the Illinois Wing, presided over the change of command and transfer of the squadron's guidon. Several members of the Illinois wing staff were present as the squadron said thank you to Maj. John Brendel for three years of leadership as the commander of the largest CAP unit in southern Illinois. During Major Brendel's tenure, the Scott Composite Squadron excelled in all primary missions of the Civil Air Patrol--emergency services, aerospace education, and the cadet program. He was an integral factor in coordinating CAP's mass support of the Scott's air shows, as well as ensuring the squadron's recognition as the cornerstone of the wing's Group One (southern Illinois) emergency services capability. Major Brendel said, "The best thing about being a commander is to be a part of helping members progress in CAP. I love doing promotions and giving awards." Major Brendel will stay involved in the local squadron as he moves into his full-time position as the group's Operations Officer. Major Hertel is no stranger to the squadron. Since joining the Civil Air Patrol in 1987, a significant majority of her time has been as a member of the Scott unit. Major Hertel is currently an active duty senior NCO assigned to Scott. Prior to assuming command, she held the position of the squadron's deputy commander for cadets. Other assignments have included personnel, administration, finance, and leadership officer. Major Hertel sees the Civil Air Patrol as, "a great place to learn about yourself as well as others. It is also an excellent opportunity and a great organization in which to positively influence our young leaders of tomorrow. "I see such potential in the squadron for both cadets and senior members. We are fortunate to be a part of the military community in that we have access to resources most other squadrons do not." Her future plans for the squadron include, "further developing our relationship with Team Scott and the local community. Our membership is as diverse as the military community. We have much to share." For more information about CAP contact SM Greg Hoffeditz at 795-1592 or il205pao@hotmail.com.
