Back-to-Basics fitness class pushes participants with fundamentals Published July 21, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Amber R. Kelly-Herard 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- In an effort to help with physical fitness, the Fitness Center staff has created a Back-to-Basics course taught by Glendora Brock, which focuses on the fundamentals of fitness. "Back to Basics is a challenge that's different every week," said Dana Czzowitz, a Back-to-Basics participant. "I truly love getting instruction from Ms. Glendora, she's a motivator. She pushes you to the limit, then when you have reached your limit she gives you a high five and says 'great job'." Mrs. Czzowitz is married to Col. David Czzowitz, of U.S. Transportation Command, and decided to workout with her husband to see what it was like. "I decided this year to get healthy and Ms. Glendora kept inviting me to go to this class," she said. "I thought I would try and see because it would be cool if I lost weight and if I didn't then at least I tried." Since then the Czzowitz family has made fitness a part of all their lives to include their 11-year-old twin daughters. To date, Mrs. Czzowitz has lost 40 pounds. Colonel Czzowitz said, "The whole family has benefitted. When Dana cooks she is more mindful and we all have the same mindset now which makes it easier to keep on track." Not only does Back-to-Basics focus on fitness, but the class also does not use any equipment. This is intentional so that all of the exercises can be performed anywhere. Tech. Sgt. Stacey Shury, 375th Logistics Readiness Squadron Shipment and Planning NCOIC, said, "The class has helped me improve on the techniques of my push-ups, sit-ups and run time. Ms. Glendora focuses on my problem areas and shows me what I'm doing wrong. "There isn't the pressure of regular PT where the people who are slower fall behind," she added. Another important element to the class is that it is a positive environment. Chief Master Sgt. Dudley Baker, Air Mobility Command Inspector General senior enlisted leader said, "No one puts anyone down. The class keeps me consistently pushing beyond my limits, which is hard to do on your own, but Ms. Glendora and the other classmates continue to cheer me on. "And I like the variety. It keeps it interesting," he added. The Back-to-Basics class meets every Tuesday at 7 a.m. The class is normally held at the James Sports Center, but due to construction, the class meets at the Honor Guard building across from the Airman Leadership School.
