Gate entry via biometrics to start in September Published Aug. 25, 2010 By 375th Mission Support Group SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott Air Force Base is implementing a Department of Defense program designed to add another layer of physical security protection, the Defense Biometrics Identification System. DBIDS stores identity data, verifying the access authorization of all personnel entering military installations using barcode technology on the Common Access Card, or CAC, in combination with fingerprint data. The use of DBIDS will begin in mid-September and a full implementation of the system is expected by fall. As a part of this implementation, Security Forces will begin using a handheld scanner on every DoD ID to validate credentials for entry to the base rather than just performing a visual inspection. The average time for this scan is three to five seconds, or about the time it currently takes the Security Forces entry controller to visually inspect the ID card. One of DBIDS' greatest attributes is the ability to detect an invalid ID card. With the use of biometrics, identities are confirmed despite the best attempts to use fake credentials. Military members in Iraq and Afghanistan are checking visitors and workers using biometrics and have been able to detain terrorists when fingerprints matched those found on an improvised explosive device. DBIDS also has the ability to control access based upon the installation entry requirement. Commanders have the ability to limit the time individuals are allowed on the installation based on preferences, force protection conditions, and other settings. The 375th Security Forces Squadron have pre-loaded most active duty assigned CAC cardholders' information into DBIDS to allow initial access; however, Team Scott members still need to complete the DBIDS enrollment process to maximize functionality. Team Scott members can go to the Visitor Control Center to confirm they are enrolled in the DBIDS system system or to enroll. All CAC holders, family members (age 15 and older), and retiree ID card holders are required to register into DBIDS. When a member is issued a new CAC, they must report to the Visitor Control Center or Room 135 in the Base Defense Operations Center (Bldg. 755) to update his or her enrollment. Security Forces will also focus on issuing DBIDS cards to non-CAC card holders and contractors employed on base. Eventually, visitors, vendors, and temporary access passes will be phased out by DBIDS cards and passes. Questions or comments can be directed to Ken Hagood at 256-5403 or Master Sgt.
