Suicide awareness field day is Sept. 2 Published Aug. 25, 2010 By Senior Airman Samantha S. Crane 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs Office SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- In recent months, the 375th Air Mobility Wing has seen an increase in suicide attempts and thoughts. In line with the recently launched Comprehensive Airman Fitness program, the Integrated Delivery System will host a Suicide Awareness Field Day Sept. 2. "We're working hard to educate warriors about the supportive options on base, and many warriors are taking advantage of the available opportunities," said Lt. Commander Julie Chodacki, U.S. Public Health Service. "The field day is one of the many ways we're trying to get the word out about the risk factors for suicide, the protective factors and the options for those who identify the need for extra support." The field day, which will be held near the Mascoutah dorms, has been named an alternate duty location. Beginning at 11 a.m. Sept. 2, the USO will serve free food and beverages while various base agencies host games and activities focusing on suicide prevention, stress and health choices. Suicide risk factors vary with age, gender and ethnic group and can change over time. The risk factors for suicide frequently occur in combination. Research has shown that more than 90 percent of people who commit suicide have depression or another diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder. A suicidal person urgently needs to see a doctor or mental health service provider. If someone is contemplating suicide, take them to the nearest emergency room or call 911. If the danger is less immanent, the mental health clinic is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for a risk assessment.
