Ban on use and possession of Spice, mood-altering substances

During September, three Article 15s were administered at Scott AFB for the use of K2 Spice.

On June 8, the Air Force published an Air Force guidance memorandum revising Air Force Instruction 44-121, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program.

The revised AFI makes punishment mandatory for the ingestion of any substance, other than alcohol or tobacco, for the purpose of altering mood or function. The possession of any intoxicating substance, if done with the intent to use in a manner that would alter mood or function, is also prohibited.

The guidance cited the designer drug "Spice,' salvia divinorum, inhalants, household chemicals, solvents and prescription drug abuse.

"The biggest thing people need to know is that this requires the Air Force to move forward with an automatic discharge," said Lt. Col. Darren Huskisson, 375th Air Mobility Wing Judge Advocate. "Violators will be punished under Article 92 of the UCMJ. Punishments may include confinement for two years and total forfeiture of all pay and allowances. Enlisted members also face reduction to the lowest enlisted grade. My advice ... it's just not worth it. Don't do it."
