Retirees stay connected at appreciation day Published Sept. 29, 2010 By 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Hundreds of military retirees visited Scott Air Force Base Saturday for the annual Retiree Appreciation Day. The day began with breakfast at the Scott Club and greetings from guest speakers including Col. Michael Hornitschek, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander; retired Col. James Bohn; and Col. Jill Sterling, 375th Medical Group commander. There were also several updates from various groups that work with senior and retiree issues, including medical topics and space available travel. Booths were set up to allow various agencies on base to share information with retirees and even offer free health screenings. The Visitor Control Center assisted retirees throughout the day with their enrollment into the Defense Biometrics Identification System and volunteers from the Military Personnel Flight opened up over the weekend for ID card processing. "This yearly event is just one of the ways we show our appreciation to our veteran's," said Colonel Hornitschek. "It's an honor to spend the day with them while showcasing all the programs available and what's new at Scott." Following lunch at the dining facility, retirees were treated to a base tour with stops at the C-21 hangar, 375th Medical Group, 375th Security Forces Military Working Dog facility and the base fire department. "The event was a huge success," said Capt. Jennifer Baker, event coordinator. "It is important to have Retiree Appreciation Day to show gratitude to those who came before us and give them up-to-date information on benefits and services they are entitled too. Retirees are part of our military family and continue to assist us by their support, advice and continued service in many areas that affect our mission."
