On the morning of Dec. 22, Kayce Lauf, a Health and Wellness Center fitness specialist here, received a phone call from her sister, Kristina, in Los Angeles, Calif., who had just been called by a 5-year-old girl from East St. Louis.

The girl, DeJana Enlow, found her grandma on the floor next to her bed and thought she was having a heart attack. She called the first number she found in her grandma's contact book, which happened to be Kristina.

"I live in Los Angeles, Calif., so I couldn't call the police there," Kristina said. "I called my sister, Kayce Lauf, who lives in St. Louis and asked her to call 911."

In turn, Ms. Lauf called 911.

"When I received the phone call, I knew I could not ignore it," Ms. Lauf said. "Even if it was a misunderstanding, I had to make the 911 call, just in case."

Emergency responders found Irene Enlow passed out from low sugar levels due to diabetes and were able to get her the necessary medical care in time.

"It proves you can never be too sure about situations like that," said Ms. Lauf. "I was just glad everything worked out."

For DeJana and her grandmother, it was a Christmas miracle.

"I love my granny," said DeJana.
