Team Scott celebrates Earth Week 2011 with activities Published April 13, 2011 By 375th Mission Support Group SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Col. Michael Hornitschek, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander, declared the week of April 18-22 Earth Week at Scott Air Force Base. The week will be brimming with environmental and energy awareness activities, culminating with a tree planting ceremony on Arbor Day, Wednesday, April 20. Additionally, from Monday through Friday there will be displays highlighting the artistic talents of elementary school students, and recycling and energy brochures in the Exchange lobby and at the Base Library. New this year is base-wide hazardous waste/materials collection day, which is April 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items may be turned in to the 90-day Consolidated Accumulation Storage Site at Bldg. 3306. Facility managers can schedule an appointment by calling 256-2184 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. before Wednesday. Scott Elementary School actively participates every year in Earth Week activities. This year's Scott AFB Earth Week poster features the artwork from the winner of the 4th and 5th grade poster contest. Other school activities include a recycling contest, an environmental art project, storm drain marking, and participation in the Arbor Day tree planting ceremony. The Arbor Day tree planting ceremony is Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Patriots Landing Youth Center. This event will recognize Scott as a Tree City USA recipient for the 19th consecutive year. This award is received for excelling in education, partnership, planning, management and tree planting. The ceremony will be conducted by Col. Kevin Webb, 375th AMW vice-commander. All base personnel are invited to attend. In the event of inclement weather, the tree planting will be cancelled. Community involvement and awareness are essential in preserving the Earth's life-giving resources. All are encouraged to do their part to enhance the environment, recycle, conserve energy and keep our waterways clean.
