More than 200 military members volunteered April 30 with Rebuilding Together Madison County--a nonprofit that rehabilitates homes.

Volunteers used their skills to help make repairs to houses of low-income, disabled and elderly homeowners. They visited 15 homes in Alton, Edwardsville, Granite City and elsewhere across Madison County.

Rebuilding Together collects applications throughout the year for potential repair spots. Approved applications must meet certain criteria; amount of income, priority of repairs needed and the amount of time needed to complete the repairs.

In a meeting with all the volunteers before the rebuilding day Scott Peery, executive director of Rebuilding Together, gave some background about one of the families the organization would be helping.

"For the last three years this couple has been giving each other a sponge bath standing in front of their bathroom mirror. Their bodies no longer allow them to step in and out of their tub to take a shower. So, we are going to replace their tub and shower and install a handicap accessible bath. It will include a bench so they can sit and bathe themselves."
Volunteers installed one other handicap accessible bath, installed ramps, repaired fences and widened doors among other numerous repairs. The work started around 8 a.m. and went through the day until all the repairs were made.
