Scott Club strives to be 'showcase'

The Scott Club's new manager and the recently re-formed Scott Club Advisory Council hope to bring fresh innovation to the club.

Manager Graelin Garlington came to Scott Air Force Base and the Scott Club six months ago from Whiteman AFB, Mo. He said the club is making improvements patrons can see, such as new uniforms for the staff and decorations, plus improvements behind the scenes in the kitchen.

"We're just trying to upgrade everything that we're doing here, to be the showcase club that leadership wants us to be," he said.

The Scott Club has new ovens in the kitchen that cook food more consistently. Plus, two certified chefs were recently added to the staff, and existing staff were provided new training.

In addition, new items have been added to the menu at Bread Works inside the club.
"It has helped everyone take more ownership for what we are trying to do for the military community here," said Mr. Garlington, a Jacksonville, Fla., native. He was in the Army for seven years, and his wife, Erika, retired from the Air Force five years ago.

The other big change behind the scenes at the club is the re-formation of an advisory council. To date, the organization has hosted two meetings.

Advisory council president, Master Sgt. Wayne Greene, of the 375th Force Support Squadron, said, "So far from those meetings we've come up with some new ideas on how we can improve club membership and improve some of the events that take place at the club."

The organization is trying to contact new Team Scott members to encourage them to switch their club membership from their old base's club to the Scott Club.

"That brings a lot more of the money back into the Scott Club where they are actually able to put on more events and keep the costs more reasonable than if someone was to actually be paying membership to a club at a different base," Sergeant Greene said.
Other changes are as simple as adding burgers to the lunch menu and trying to bring more live entertainment to the club.

Sergeant Greene said the advisory council is accepting new members.

"We are always looking for new ideas and new concepts and anyone who wants to pitch an idea or get their message heard are more than welcome to attend the meetings," he said.

The Scott Club Advisory Council meets the first Monday of every month. The next meeting is June 6, at 2 p.m., at the club. New members are welcomed to attend.
