Fitness Challenge tests Airmen's strength, endurance Published May 26, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Jacob Eckhardt 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Sixteen teams competed Friday during the Scott Air Force Base Fitness Challenge 2011. The teams were vying to win the "Unit Fitness Challenge Unit Champions" trophy and money to help out their units. The event started at 7 a.m. with a 5K and 10K run. Next, the teams completed 600 push-ups and sit-ups as fast as they could. Each team then did 25 pull-ups as quickly as possible. Each event earned the teams more points. At the end of the fitness challenge, six checks, ranging from $200 to $1,000, were presented to the six best teams by Col. Mike Hornitschek, the 375th Air Mobility Wing commander. In first place, winning $1000, was the 375th Civil Engineer Squadron. In second place, winning $750, was the 375th Security Forces Squadron. In third place, winning $550, was the 15th Operational Weather Squadron. In fourth place, winning $350, was the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. In fifth place, winning $200, was the 458th Airlift Squadron. In sixth place, winning $200, was the Air Force Network Integration Center. "All the teams did a great job," said Lt. Col. Craig Johnson, 375th Civil Engineer Squadron commander. "It's great to get out here and compete at such a high level with a lot of great athletes across the board here. I'm just real proud of their performances." Colonel Hornitschek said, "From the concept of the idea, through the planning, to the actual execution, it was an outstanding event. This event was made possible by Comprehensive Airmen Fitness funding that Air Mobility Command gave us to do exactly these kinds of things: to celebrate, to connect, to communicate and do all the things that brings us together and make us more resilient. Not only is it a fun event, but it helps support the idea of being fit servicemembers. I hope this becomes an annual tradition here at our base because it's a great demonstration of how life is at Team Scott--outstanding!"
