For many families a trip to the movie theater is common place, but for some children with special needs, the theater setting isn't an option. But, with the help of the Exceptional Family Member Program at Scott Air Force Base, it can be.

Last December, Natalie Jackson, EFMP Family Support Coordinator, teamed up with the Exchange to offer the first sensory-friendly movie for Team Scott families and children with special needs. The Sensory Movie Program at Scott was featured as a "Best Practice" during the recent Air Force-wide EFMP-FS/School Liaison Officer training conference in San Antonio.

During sensory-friendly movies, lights remain on and the sound is turned down, which allows children to feel less stimulated and more comfortable in their environment while enjoying a trip to the theater.

"Having the lights on and the sound turned down have been adjustments seen as helpful in allowing those with sensory challenges to enjoy the movie experience," said Natalie Jackson, Scott's EFMP Family Support Coordinator. "A sensory movie environment also acts as an empathetic setting for those with special needs. Moving around, talking, dancing and singing are not recognized as disruptive and an animated reaction to stimuli is met with kindness and understanding."

At Scott there are more than 500 family members enrolled in EFMP, yet the nearest sensory movie experience is about 40 minutes away in Edwardsville, Ill., and while some families make the trip, many do not have the option.

"We have many of our parents drive all the way out there so their children can see a movie," said Mrs. Jackson. "Unfortunately, we also have some children who have never experienced what it's like to go to a movie theater."

This summer's movies include "Planet 51" June 25 at 2 p.m., "Bolt" July 23 at 2 p.m. and "Tangled" Aug. 6 at 2 p.m.

Families are also invited to bring their own snacks in case there are special dietary needs. The concession stand will also be open during this time.
