More than 200 children attend Vacation Bible School at Scott Published July 20, 2011 By Staff Sgt. Stephenie Wade 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- Yellow taxis, apples and street-signs decorated Chapel 1 designating July 10-14 as Protestant Vacation Bible School at Scott Air Force Base. VBS took place 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. More than 200 children attended this years' VBS according to Andrea Beringer, the Protestant Religious Education Coordinator. "This is the most children we've had," said Beringer. "So we took extra precautions for safety. This year we had the chapel staff perform road guard duties and parents showed identification to pick up their child." There were also 64 volunteers from all around base who helped coordinate and run the daily events. As an extra precaution, all volunteers working with children were required to have a background check. "This year's overall theme was the Big Apple Adventure, but each day also had its own theme," said Beringer. At the beginning of the day, children gathered for morning prayer, then the children were split up into groups according to age to participate in a wide variety of events to include Bible story, life application, journal time, crafts, snacks and outdoor recreation. Each day also ended with a prayer. Thomas Tate, 11, has attended Vacation Bible School many times, and said he always learns something new. "The activities this year are very fun, some are difficult, but fun," said Tate. "I really learned a lot. My faith of Jesus is growing stronger and stronger." The funds for VBS come from the tithes and offerings. "This year we hope the children will hear God's word, believe it and connect it with their daily lives," said Beringer.
