A&FRC and PASS host education workshop Published July 27, 2011 A&FRC Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center and Parent Advocates for Students and Schools hosted a workshop July 20 called "Starting Your Child in School." The workshop is part of an on-going effort to educate parents on ways to give their child a successful and meaningful jump start toward their early education years, and educate parents on being a proper advocate for their child. The PASS workshops are led by parents and local educators who help military parents become better advocates for their children while transferring from school to school due to military relocations. Parents learn more about the local school systems, while educators learn more about the unique needs of military-connected students. This month's workshop was hosted by Rachel Rosier. Rosier is a teacher, mother and military wife. She graduated from Texas A&M University with degrees in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She has trained teachers and school administrators in developmentally appropriate teaching of mathematics to students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Rosier is currently the principal for Shiloh Elementary School. A panel of school administrators was also available to answer questions that parents had that were specific to their child's needs. During the workshop Hines focused on the objectives of the workshop "Starting Your Child in School." These objectives included: Helping children achieve a successful start to their education. Understanding how to register children in Illinois schools and documents required. Better understanding early literacy activities for children. Inexpensive ideas parents can use at home to help spark their child's natural desire to learn. Internet resources to help prepare children for school. Understanding the importance of proper advocacy for children. This parent workshop is just one example of the many successful workshops that PASS has planned.
