Officials offer tips for moving during peak season

Personal Property Processing Offices, or PPPOs, will facilitate nearly 50,000 moves during this year's peak moving season, and to make it as seamless a transition as possible, PPPOs will rely on everyone to do their part.

Due to many factors, including a shortage of private sector drivers, an increase in private sector moves and recent relocations due to Base Realignment and Closure mandates, customers are experiencing longer delays within the continental United States, and while some waits can't be avoided, others can.

Many of these avoidable delays stem from servicemembers not turning in a copy of their orders to their local PPPO in time. It is recommended to contact your local office as soon as you have orders. Other ways to help the process include:

Provide both primary and alternate move dates;

Provide valid e-mail addresses and phone numbers that you can be reached at throughout the move;

Consider moving outside the peak summer season;

Remember to obtain and keep numbers and points of contact from the transportation service provider conducting your move;

Contact PPPO immediately if your provider doesn't initiate contact within 10 days of primary pack and pick up dates or if they don't arrive on the projected moving day.

Another option servicemembers can consider is performing a Personally Procured Move, or PPM. These moves allow members to control their own move dates and avoid any delay between arriving to a new assignment and receiving their personal property. Members are also reimbursed 95 percent of the cost of a government move.

To finish a move, customers must also complete a customer satisfaction survey, which impacts the quality rating of transportation service providers. Surveys arrive via e-mail seven to 30 days after the shipment is delivered. They can also be accessed through www.move.mil or by calling (800) 462-2176.
