On base archery hunting permits available now Published Aug. 17, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Jake Eckhardt 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- Deer season is set to begin and 100 archery hunting permits are on sale in the 375th Security Forces Squadron Bldg. 755, room 115. Permits are $10 each and proceeds support the Scott Fish and Wildlife fund. Patrons must hold an Illinois hunting license, habitat stamp and deer tags. "The intended purpose of hunting on base is to keep the deer population down so they don't come out onto the flightline and ramps," said Ralph Texter, the Base Conservation Officer. "Letting people hunt at Scott is part of a program similar to the Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard program." Scott hunters have access to the wooded area from Scott Lake to the Superior Street railroad west of Silver Creek. At times, the Mid-America Airport Authority hosts a random drawing to grant hunting access to Mid-America properties if they so choose. Base hunting rules still apply and Mid-America property patrons are only allowed to hunt on that property for the season. Archery hunting season begins Oct. 1 and lasts through Jan. 15, 2012. Hunters must wear orange Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 29 through Jan. 1. For more information, call Ralph Texter at 256-6065.
