Defense Information Systems Agency earned its second consecutive Scott Air Force Base softball championship Aug. 19 with a 15-5 victory over Air Mobility Command (AMC/A4). The victory capped an extraordinary 19-1 season that included both a preseason tournament title along with the Scott AFB Championship.

The season started with DISA earning the preseason championship by winning all five contests. Although DISA enjoyed the victory, the real challenge was to defend their championship throughout a grueling 10 game, five week regular season and the championship tournament that followed. DISA finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and earned the No. 3 seed in the championship tournament.

"This tournament will be our season's true test," said player-coach Mike Jacobs. "But we have worked hard all season; we're up to the challenge."

The tournament started with DISA rattling off wins against Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Air Force Network Integration Center and AMC/A4 on consecutive days to earn a spot in the semi-finals. DISA would need to get by United States Transportation Command to make it to the finals for the second straight year. DISA leaned on their tough defense and some timely hitting to pull ahead of USTRANSCOM 5-0 before coasting to a 5-2 final and a chance to defend.

AMC/A4 fought their way through the losers' bracket to take on DISA in the championship of the double-elimination bracket. DISA put together their most complete effort of the season in a 15-5 win, completing the difficult task of winning back-to-back Scott AFB championships.

DISA isn't quite satisfied yet, according to Jacobs.

"We worked hard to win this year, but I know this team is going to come out hungry next year and try to add a three-peat to our resume. I know it won't be easy as there are 31 other teams out there vying for the title, but we've proven we know what it takes to win and we can lean on that experience in the seasons to come."
