PASS will present 'Roadmap to Your Child's Future' Published Nov. 9, 2011 Airman and Family Readiness Center Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host a Parent Advocates for Students and Schools, or PASS, workshop Wednesday, Nov. 16 called, "Roadmap to Your Child's Future." This workshop is part of an on-going effort to educate parents and students on how to begin gathering the knowledge and information necessary to gain acceptance into the college or career path of choice. This workshop is predominantly geared for students from eighth grade to high school. The guest speakers are Chyriell Hill and Capt. Lance Summy. Hill is known for her passion in advocating for youth seeking educational opportunities, her strong sense of leadership and personal integrity. Hill said her mission is to help others succeed. She has been recognized by local, state and national organizations for her advocacy and commitment to education and community service. She is currently the Department Chair/Director of Guidance for Belleville East High School. Summy is the Regional Director of Admissions of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Northwest Region located at St. Louis University. Summy is committed to educating students who wish to be part of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps about the AFROTC program and its current requirements. During the "Roadmap to Your Child's Future" workshop, Hill and Summy will focus on the following five objectives: Help parents understand how they can help military-connected or other highly mobile students maneuver their way through the intricacies of grade 8-12 and post-secondary choices; Help parents understand the significant areas of importance for academic preparation separated into middle school, freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, and senior year; Help parents understand issues associated with moving to a new school, academic preparation, paying for college, selecting the right college for their children. Post-secondary topics include vocational-technical or career-technical information, SAT and ACT exams, college visits and virtual campus tours, ROTC, JROTC, and academy options; Provide parents with internet resources to help prepare their children for career and college preparation; Understand the importance of proper advocacy for your child. The PASS workshops are led by parents and local educators who train and provide tools to help military parents become advocates for their child while transferring from school to school because of military relocations. Parents learn more about all school systems in general and the local school systems in particular. An additional by-product of the workshops is that educators learn more about the unique needs of military-connected students. This parent workshop is just one example of the many successful workshops that PASS has planned. For more information regarding this or any other PASS workshops, call A&FRC at 256-8668.
