Staying healthy during the holidays

Contrary to popular belief, the average holiday weight gain is about 1-2 pounds, but our problem is we tend to keep it on and gain more with each passing year. Unfortunately our bodies do not know the difference between holiday calories (that aren't supposed to count, right) and non-holiday calories...they both add up the same, potential weight gain. So if you are one of those individuals that worked hard this year to get healthy, lose or maintain your weight, or maybe you want to start, here are some helpful tips on how to do so:

Be realistic. Don't try to lose weight during the holidays, this could be self defeating. Try to maintain your weight.

Never arrive with a big appetite. Don't skip meals or save up calories, this will just encourage over eating. Focus on eating smaller portions and lower calorie foods that day before the event.

Make just one trip. Scan the buffet first and make a mental plan, choose the foods you really want and keep portions small, often just a taste satisfies. Eat slowly and savor every bite.

Choose lower-calorie party foods. Go easy on cheese, desserts and fried options. Look for fruits, veggies, or shrimp cocktail. To ensure there are some healthful treats, help out the host by bringing such a dish.

Watch liquid calories. Calories from drinks add up quickly.

Meet and greet. Don't just enjoy the holiday food, enjoy the time spent with family and friends. Get settled into the festivities with conversation, it is calorie free and you might make some new friends.

Enjoy physical activity. Even short bouts of activity spread out during the day can make a difference towards caloric balance. Think of activities everyone can enjoy, walking, biking to view Christmas decorations or a flag football game. These could be family traditions that will continue with each holiday season.
