Airman's Attic new electronics acceptance policy Published Jan. 4, 2012 Airman's Attic SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Governor Quinn recently signed amended legislation which makes extensive changes to the Illinois Products Recycling and Reuse Act (Public Act 097-0287) that takes effect Jan. 1, 2012. This legislation expands the number of covered electronic products in Illinois from 4 to seventeen. The act also imposes severe penalties for improper disposal of electronics. The legislation has added a more complex way to evaluate the electronics we have traditionally accepted and the limited way we can dispose of outdated or excess electronics. In the past we have exclusively used Goodwill Industries in Belleville to dispose of the majority of our excess or obsolete or excess electronics. Waste management companies can no longer accept electronics in their disposal sites without suffering severe penalties. Disposal in our dumpster therefore is not an option. We will give donors of electronics the following information contained in the handout beginning Jan. 1, 2012 when the donor's electronic donation is declined. A sign at the electronics section inside the Airman's Attic will be posed to inform shoppers of the new law and why we will likely accept and have available far fewer electronics than we have in past years. Due to recent changes in the Illinois Products Recycling and Reuse Act (Public Act 097-0287) effective Jan. 1, 2012 we will no longer accept the following electronics at the Chief Master Sgt. Gene R. Collins' Airman's Attic. Each electronic donation should be evaluated individually by management to determine the likelihood of quick movement through the Airman's Attic. Donated electronics that cannot be accepted due to age of electronics our the inability to dispose of item will be declined at the loading dock by a manager or senior core volunteer. Electronics currently shelved at the Airman's Attic will be reviewed and excess or outdated electronics disposed of in increments through Goodwill prior to Jan. 1, 2012. The donor will not dispose of the declined electronic in our dumpster.
