Military Saves Week begins Saturday Published Feb. 15, 2012 Airman and Family Readiness Center SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Military Saves is a national campaign to promote personal financial behavior by developing institutional partnerships that encourage savings. Each year a memo from the Office of the Secretary of Defense is issued to support Military Saves Week. Scott Air Force Base will kick off the campaign Saturday. The goal is to create an information environment that promotes a clear direction for financial readiness. The program provides the opportunity to start an individual commitment to action by providing education and tools to implement the savings initiative. The campaign tag line this year is "Start Small, Think Big." Research has shown that individuals who set up a savings plan are more likely to save successfully. This is accomplished through setting a goal, making a plan and creating an automatic savings account. The process is to "Start Small"--create an emergency account, save three to six months living expenses and move to "Think Big" - start a medium-to-long term plan and begin a retirement savings plan. The objective for the event is to reach military personnel, family members, Department of Defense civilians and contractors. They are encouraged to receive Military Saves electronic newsletters for financial readiness and other saving tips. The campaign may only last a couple weeks, but the process lasts a life time.
