Staff Sgt. Jeremy Rivera, 375th Logistics Readiness Squadron Deployments NCOIC, was recently selected as one of the 18th Air Force's 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year.

When Rivera, a native of Bollingbrook, Ill., returned from his deployment from Joint Base Balad, Iraq, last May his leadership immediately recognized his significant accomplishments.

"Sergeant Rivera is an exceptionally talented NCO, and we are very lucky to have him in the squadron," said Maj. Kyle Hurwitz, 375th LRS commander.

"I'm humbled by this recognition," said Rivera. "This is an incredible experience, and it's an amazing honor to represent the 18th AF at the Air Mobility Command level."

Throughout the year, Rivera played an instrumental role both stateside and deployed. While deployed he was a crucial player in the drawdown and eventual withdrawal from Iraq. He helped manage the redeployment of more than 4,000 personnel and 500 tons of cargo accomplishing the task two months prior to the deadline.

While his base was under indirect fire, Rivera charged outside to drag a fellow Wingman inside, saving his life. For this he was nominated for the Spirit of Hope award which is awarded to servicemembers who epitomize the values of Bob Hope: Duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity and selfless dedication.

"I know Jeremy is a fantastic person to represent the 18th Air Force at the Air Mobility Command level and hopefully beyond," said Hurwitz. "With just five years time in service, Rivera stepped up to a position typically held by a senior NCO and led his flight through their first Combined Unit Inspection and Logistics Compliance Assessment Program. Because of their performance the Inspector General awarded his flight three Best Practices and an Outstanding Performance.

"Not only does Jeremy epitomize the Air Force core values, but he has a strong sense of ownership in his work," said Hurwitz. "He exudes pride in what he and his Airmen accomplish--just being around him you recognize that he is a professional Airman."

Rivera was able to fulfill 14 college credit hours while maintaining this workload to complete his Community College of the Air Force degree with a 4.0 grade point average. He has volunteered 185 hours of his personal time to help out with various agencies. In his free time Rivera enjoys spending time with his wife and is also describes himself as an avid auto racer, with a Nissan NISMO 350z to prove it.

"I know this isn't an individual accomplishment," said Rivera. "I am grateful to be a part of such a remarkable team, as this demonstrates their dedication and professionalism."
