Team Scott celebrates Earth Week with events Published April 18, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Joshua Eikren 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- "Conserve today, secure tomorrow,"--that's the Air Force-wide Earth Week theme being echoed across the Air Force and Scott Air Force Base this week. The annual, national campaign promotes conservation of natural resources and energy. Scott kicked-off Earth Week by hosting events for Scott Elementary that included: a fourth and fifth grade poster contest, recycling contest for third graders, and an awards ceremony to celebrate both contests. The week also included tree planting by third and fourth graders, and an electronics recycling opportunity, hosted by E-wits, at the Exchange. The Scott Earth Week poster winner was Lillian Dickson, a fourth grader, whose "Earth has life, don't destroy it" poster has been used to promote Earth Week on base. "Conserving today" is nothing new to Team Scott. Last year's conservation awareness campaign introduced small penny-like stickers used to indicate the amount of energy consumed by devices like computer monitors, light switches, and coffee pots. This year, Scott is part of the Air Force's "Blue Acts of Green" campaign that is focused on social media awareness to encourage performing environmentally-friendly practices at home or work. The Air Force is highlighting pollution prevention efforts as organizations look for ways to minimize waste and reduce operating expenses. Air Force officials emphasize there is always more that can be done and it takes a concentrated effort from all members of the team. In addition, Scott is a Tree City for the 19th year and will commemorate it with an Arbor Day ceremony April 27, at 10 a.m., at the Scott Club. All are welcome to attend. Col. Michael Hornitschek, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander, said, "Community involvement and awareness are essential in preserving the Earth's life-giving resources. All are encouraged to do their part to enhance the environment, recycle, conserve energy and keep waterways clean."
