As the Critical Days of Summer reaches its 12th week at Scott, safety officials want to inform and prepare Airmen as they head into the Labor Day weekend.

Critical Days of Summer's objective is to call attention to the tragic loss or injury of Airmen during the summertime and to make Airmen realize that safety is personal for them, their families, friends and co-workers.

According to the 375th Safety Office, there have been 13 fatalities Air Force wide through the 12 weeks of Critical Days of Summer. The majority of the fatalities were caused due to poor motor vehicle safety precautions.

When traveling always include planning and risk management, and before you start your trip consider the long distance driving risks as well as how the car is packed. Distracted driving can also divert a driver's attention by texting, using a cell phone, eating and drinking or talking to passengers.

For those looking to barbecue, fire safety is key when dealing with gas or charcoal fires. Take precautions while outside in the summer heat as it will increase heat related injuries and illnesses.

Lastly, fatigue is often overlooked by many, but it is a normal response to stress, boredom, physical exertion or simply a lack of sleep. Sleep is crucial to people's ability to perform in any situation, but also a necessary and vital function.

The safety office emphasizes the importance of in-person interaction between commanders, supervisors, and Airmen.
