Summer safety campaign ends Published Sept. 19, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Joshua Eikren 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The Critical Days of Summer campaign ended Sept. 4 with zero fatalities at Scott Air Force Base. The Air Force ended CDS with 16 fatalities, two less than last year, but saw an increase in motorcycle fatalities with nine this year. "Across Air Mobility Command we lost five Airmen," said Marilee Reuter, 375th Safety Office deputy chief. "There was one motorcycle fatality and the other four were private motor vehicle fatalities with alcohol a factor in all four." The safety office wants to remind Airmen that they can reduce fatalities by wearing seatbelts, adhering to speed limits, always traveling at appropriate speeds for conditions and never drinking and driving. Reuter said, "With zero fatalities on Scott, the Critical Days of Summer was successful and it allowed Airmen to focus on their families and their mission. While we are glad we had zero fatalities, we can never let our guard down." As the holiday season approaches, Air Force Safety prepares for their next campaign, the 40 Festive Days and Nights which runs from Thanksgiving through New Year's. The 40 Festive Days and Nights campaign is focused to prevent holiday fatalities and along with it bring a general awareness to safety that Airmen should practice year round. Col. David Almand, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander said, "This year's slogan, 'Be your own safety manager' has proved to be a great tool to keep us all properly focused and now's a great time to quickly re-emphasize its importance to keep us on the right path."
