Of the 47 enlisted eligible for Officer Training School, this year not one but two were chosen from Scott Air Force Base.

Staff Sgt. Lewis William Tartt IV, 345th Recruiting Squadron recruiter, and Staff Sgt. Juan Flores, 54th Airlift Squadron flight attendant, were selected for an opportunity to trade their stripes for gold bars as second lieutenants. The Air Force Recruiting Service selected 398 of 507 applications submitted for OTS this September.

"Becoming an Air Force Officer has been a goal since the arrival at my first duty location," said Tartt. "Throughout my career there have been numerous officers that mentored and influenced me to become an Air Force officer."

To be selected, board members review many factors to include each applicant's academic discipline, grade point average and Air Force Officer Qualifying Test score.

"The first thing I had to do is complete my bachelor's degree or be within 365 days of completion to take my AFQT," said Tartt. "Interviews were conducted to determine my ability to be an officer and I met with my education counselor to compile my application package."

In addition, the board subjectively evaluates work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability, potential for future growth and other recommendations.

"Any Airman with an aspiration to become a commissioned officer has to accomplish the things the Air Force expects them to accomplish. If you are passionate about the Air Force and continually perform at your highest potential you will be recognized by your unit through EPRs, awards, and decorations," said Tartt.

Every application is also reviewed by three Air Force colonels. The selection process is similar to an Air Force officer promotion board. No single factor leads to an individual's selection or non-selection, according to OTS selection officials.

People selected can expect to attend Basic Officer Training at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in the later part of 2013 and into 2014.

Tartt said, "As I cross into the commissioning world, my goal is to continue to be the best Airman possible. Leading from the front and mentoring the Air Force's future generation is my main objective as an officer. I feel I owe the officers who mentored me by continuing the legacy of building Airmen to their maximum potential."
