Medical clinic property going smoke-free Published Nov. 7, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Joshua Eikren 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The 375th Medical Group officials have deemed the clinic and campus as smoke free beginning Nov. 15 to coincide with the upcoming Great American Smoke-out. According to the American Cancer Society, Nov. 15 marks the day medical facilities nationwide look to encourage smokers to plan to quit smoking that day. By doing so, officials noted, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life that includes reducing cancer risks. "Countless studies have determined the use of tobacco to be a leading contributing factor toward the prevalence of illness and disease in the United States," said Heather Braundmeier, 375th Aerospace Medical Squadron Health and Wellness Center flight commander. Representatives also are set to man tobacco prevention and education booths at the HAWC and clinic to celebrate the Great American Smoke-out and share information on the dangers of tobacco use. "The Scott Air Force Base Health & Wellness Center is here to help and can provide you with the steps necessary to quit tobacco use," said Braundmeier. "They will also provide the resources and support that can significantly increase your chances of quitting successfully." The medical clinic policy also states that designated tobacco areas across base must be at least 50 feet from any buildings or ventilation systems. "The intent of this policy is to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce the incidence of disease and establish the 375th Medical Group as its role model," said the HAWC commander.
