Scott Elementary school hosted its annual family reading night Nov. 8 for students and parents.

The reading event promoted the importance of reading as a family, and offered various stations that taught different ways of reading.

"Reading is so much more than just sitting down and reading," said Kathy Lickenbrock, a reading teacher at Scott Elementary and organizer of the event. "We encourage parents to play reading games with their children, like Scrabble or other word games."

Students picked up a bookmark at the registration table, and visited each station to receive a stamp for their bookmark.

Stations included games, reading exercises, a book swap and poetry reading. The stations were manned by teachers from the school.

At the poetry station, students wrote their own poem, or chose a poem, and read the poem out loud.

Claire Tate, a second grader, memorized the poem, "Rainbow Man," and recited it to a captivated audience.

"I studied every day and every night," the 8-year-old said. "The poem was two pages, and I thought it was too long, but I fell in love with it."

Tate said the poetry station wasn't her favorite activity. It was the book swap. "It was a chance to look at other books and take them home for free."

Lickenbrock said, "Reading night is something everyone looks forward to. Military parents get to meet the teachers outside of the teaching environment. The students get to interact with the teachers in a way they don't normally see."

More than 300 parents and students attended the family reading night.

"I am extremely pleased with the reading night," she said. "I am blessed to work with the most caring people. They truly will go the extra mile to make sure all of the students at Scott Elementary have a rewarding, successful experience while they are here."
