Follow parking rules on base Published Jan. 9, 2013 375th Security Forces Squadron SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- It is no secret that there is limited parking on the installation, however, this does not mean personnel can park in non-designated areas as a convenience. The common response to parking violations has been, "It didn't say I couldn't park there." Fortunately, there is a response to this argument and it can be found in the Scott AFB Instruction 31-218 Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision. In laymen's terms this instruction is the installation "traffic code" and specifically speaks where members can park. SAFBI 31-218 states, "No person will park or stop any vehicle on a roadway or adjacent to a curb, unless the area is marked or labeled as parking. Marked or labeled parking includes street stenciling or curb mounted parking signs." What this means is just because there is room to park, like at the end row adjacent a curb or gap along the curb between parking rows, doesn't not mean members can park there. If the area is not marked as described above, it is not an authorized parking space. Security Forces will be out and about looking for these violations and issuing citations as needed. These parking citations will assess two points towards your driving privileges on the installation and three points if members illegally park in a handicapped spot without proper credentials. Collect too many points and members risk the revocation of driving privileges. The 375th Security Forces Squadron asks that when going to the workplace, the Exchange, commissary, or other gathering areas, please take the additional time to notice if cars are in a properly marked, stenciled and or posted signs designated parking area. If there is a question or concern about parking at a specific facility, please direct your questions to the building's facility manager for the correct information regarding their parking standard. Facility managers can address these concerns with the Base Traffic Engineer.
