New Outdoor Adventure program offered at Scott Published Jan. 23, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Stephenie Wade 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott's Outdoor Recreation Center will kick-start a new initiative this year called the Outdoor Adventure program, designed to provide off base, outdoor activities varying from high-risk to children friendly. Adventure enthusiast and mastermind behind the program, Garry Green said after he arrived at Scott a little over a year ago, he noticed a void in outdoor recreation. "I wanted to create a program that would directly impact the quality of life and increase moral of our Airmen and their families," said Green, who is also in charge of leading the groups on adventures. The cost varies from $15 to $60 and includes supplies from ODR if needed and transportation. Activities are available to anyone with base access but availability is first come first serve basis. "This spring we will see an increase in the volume of outdoor recreation activities, for example rafting, rock climbing and an overnight backpacking trip," Green said. Military members are encouraged to inform their leadership and safety representative if participating in high-risk activities. ODR also requests members to sign a waiver prior to departure for the trip. "As far as safety goes ODR inspects all equipment and gear to ensure that it is in good working order and all trips are assisted by experienced individuals in the activity," said Green. "Additionally all the trips have been scouted for age suitability and customer precautions." The ODR High Adventure Series activities are: · Jan. 26. Winter Wilderness Day Hike and Cave Exploration · Feb. 23 Winter Challenge Day Hike at Hawn State Park. To sign up for trips members can visit www.fss.com, the new kiosk in Information Tickets and Travel office, or call 256-3204.
