Scott library steps into the digital age of reading Published Feb. 13, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Stephenie Wade 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Do you like reading books online but don't have access to an e-reader device? The library at Scott recently purchased six Nooks and are available to all members with base access. There are some 40 million e-readers and 65 million tablets in use in the U.S., according to analysts at Forrester Research. In the first quarter of 2012, e-books generated $282 million in sales, compared with $230 million for adult hardcover books, the Association of American Publishers recently found. Steve Keller, reference librarian, said, "We wanted to provide people with the opportunity to get familiar with the devices. We have a wide variety of audiences at Scott." The device is read-only, meaning members cannot download and save content to the Nook. However there are 16 free books already on the device. "The Nooks are very popular," said Keller who has worked at Scott's Library for 13-years." All of them are currently checked out, three by military members, three by civilians, and there are eight reservations pending upon return." The Nooks can be checked out for a three week time period, for most that is the average time it takes to read a book. The devices can also be reserved online through the library online catalog website.
