Car wash being remodeled Published Feb. 20, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Jake Eckhardt 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott AFB is replacing its mid-1990s car wash system with a $170,000 equipment upgrade made possible thanks to profits from the old car wash system, which is owned and operated by the Arts and Crafts Center. Bill Armstrong, Arts and Crafts Center director said, "This will be one of the more modern car washes in the area." The Arts and Crafts Center is replacing the manual cleaning bays system with new equipment providing more options such as tri-color conditioning soap, high pressure wax and clear coat protectant. The car wash will also have a covered detailing station. The area will include vacuum islands, carpet cleaning machines and fragrance machines. "The distance between the car wash bay and the vacuums were one of the problems we fixed," he said. "Currently, the vacuums are located outside the bay exit doors, leaving the car to get splashed from the car behind it and forcing that car to stay there until they were done vacuuming. The vacuums will now be 100 feet or so away on their own island." All of the stations will cost $1.50 or less to start and the machines will also accept dollar bills now instead of just quarters. "Our facilities have to be self-sustaining," he said. "The car wash helps the craft center do that. One portion of our shop can make a lot of money, than that portion can help with any shortfalls that any other parts of the center may have." The Arts and Crafts Center plans to have the grand opening of the new car wash and an open house March 23.
