The 375th Force Support Squadron opened a new multi-purpose, high intensity training room Feb. 20 at the James Sports Center at Scott AFB.

"We identified a need, not only for a room catering to high intensity type workouts," said Staff Sgt. Jason Relik, 375th FSS fitness center specialist, "but also an expanded family area."

Relik guided 375th Air Mobility Wing leadership on a tour of the new room and the equipment.

"The equipment is great for people who have back injuries," Relik explained while another Airman demonstrated the new "Pit Shark" machine. "It de-loads the spine and takes the stress off of your back."

As the group made their way around the room, Relik explained how to use each piece of new equipment and the benefit each one provides the user. Two members of the fitness staff also provided a live demonstration for the group.

"The purpose of the new room is to give members a high intensity alternative to normal workouts, while providing members with children a wider range of exercise equipment options,"Relik said.

Individuals with children now have the option of complete workouts that will improve all components of their fitness, whereas before, the room only provided cardio equipment.

After the tour was finished, Col. David Almand, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander said, "I think we are on the right track on the culture of fitness that is changing in the Air Force."

Almand went on to quote Gen. A. J. Stewart, Air Force Personnel Center commander, "Be fit, be strong and be healthy every day. Fitness is not about just passing the Air Force fitness test or deploying, it is about saving your life. A well-rested, strong body and a healthy diet can help you fight off tough challenges when they come."

Currently the room is available on a first come, first served basis. For individuals or groups who wish to use the room, the gym staff advises you show up early to ensure you have access to the equipment you require.

Almand closed by saying, "These types of things are influencing us to live healthy positive lives while we serve alongside our families."
