Health and Wellness Center hosts ‘Foodie Friday’ class Published March 13, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Maria Bowman 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The Health and Wellness Center hosted its first Foodie Friday cooking class at the Airman and Family Readiness Center Friday. The class emphasized budget-friendly meal planning and grocery shopping. "The purpose of the class was to increase healthy eating behaviors among our active duty members," said Kathy Steinbrecher, HAWC health promotion dietitian. "All participants learned how to prepare two recipes by working together and going through each step. "This ensures success when the dishes are recreated at home." Participants learned how to use slow cookers, pre-cook meals and the importance of budget-friendly cuts of meat and poultry. Participants learned how to make a chicken dish and beef goulash. "Less expensive cuts of meat commonly need more cooking time," Steinbrecher said. "Therefore, the slow cookers are great kitchen equipment for that type of cooking. Many recipes which can be cooked in a slow cooker have few steps and few ingredients, and most of the meal is ready when arriving home from work." Master Sgt. Christopher Kaelin, 375th Air Mobility Wing Inspector General superintendent, said that he benefited from this class. "I liked the idea of using less expensive meats, and saving energy by using a slow cooker to prepare meals vs. the oven or stovetop," he said. "We had a chance to help prepare the meal and then taste a sample of the finished product. Anyone who wants to know different ways of cooking should attend this class." Foodie Friday classes are slated for once a quarter and HAWC officials are considering a healthy grilling course for their next class in June. Steinbrecher said, "Those who are new to cooking, or have limited cooking skills, and are interested in learning budget-friendly tips and tools for meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking will truly benefit from these classes."
