Outdoor Recreation hosted an overnight backpacking trip along Bell Mountain Wilderness Trail in Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest Saturday and Sunday.

The trip was a part of the Single Airmen's Initiative, which allowed single Airmen, E-4 and below, to go for free.

Airman 1st Class Richard Meaker, 375th Communication Support Squadron, said, "This type of activity helps build character and group dynamic."

The trip began at 7 a.m. with eight hikers led by Garry Green, Outdoor Recreation's Adventure Program director. As part of the adventure, participants gathered firewood, built a campsite and prepared their own food.

Some of the Airmen on the trip were new to Scott and were looking to meet people while on the trip. Others were just eager for adventure.

Senior Airman Timothy Sentz, 375th Communications Squadron, said, "It's programs like this that need to be protected because they make the everyday challenges of being an Airman easier."

Garry Green said Outdoor Recreation programs, such as the Single Airmen's Initiative, require support and involvement from the base.
