Sergeant organizes event helping homeless veterans Published April 24, 2013 By Senior Airman Jake Eckhardt 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are about 76,000 homeless veterans in the United States. About 300 of those veterans are located in the St. Louis area. Master Sgt. Mary Price, U.S. Transportation Command, joined the Homeless Veterans program a year ago to give veterans in need a second chance at a comfortable life. "I really think it's important to give back to the veterans," she said. "Everyone is just one job away from this happening to them." The Homeless Veterans program is a DOD program that is committed to ending homelessness among veterans. Price organized an event with the help of the Department of Veterans Affairs, United States Organizations and local counties April 20 that provided food, clothing, job placement, home placement, haircuts and medical services to homeless veterans. More than 100 volunteers assisted in the event and talked to the veterans. Master Sgt. Jerry Price, Air Mobility Command headquarters, and Mary Price's husband, helped with the event. "Mary took the lead on this program for USTRANSCOM, and we've always helped each other out on projects that we take on, so it was natural that I helped her out on this," Jerry said. The team's shared compassion for helping and knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses is what made the event a success. "People don't know where to go when this happens to them," she said. "We just want them to know that there are organizations out there willing to help." For more information on the program or to volunteer, contact Master Sgt. Mary Price at mary.price.2@us.af.mil.
