Lt. Col. Christine Blice-Baum, 375th Air Mobility Wing chaplain, leads the free "Improving Your Running with Yoga" class at Chapel One.

The class began Tuesday and continues for a six week period every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. No registration is required and all adult base personnel are welcome to come and go whenever they would like. ABUs can be worn to the class. Boots can be taken off at the beginning.

"The amazing thing about yoga is it can help you calm down if you are agitated, but also if you're very tired it can energize you," said Blice-Baum. "It has this dual effect on the body and the nervous system."

She developed the program as part of her research to finish her 500 hour certification.

The class begins every 30 minute session with five minutes of breathing exercises, followed by 15 minutes of working on poses. These poses could be incorporated into cool down and dynamic stretching for running or other physical activity. The last 10 minutes are a time for deep relaxation. Tables will be set up afterward if people are interested in using the time after yoga to eat their lunch right at the chapel.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats; however, there are a limited amount of yoga mats available for use.

Blice-Baum hopes to gather a group of people who want to be in a study from beginning until end to participate in her survey that will measure the before and after of individual's balance, flexibility, range of motion and lifestyle choices. She is inquiring to know the goals that these individuals have before coming to the class also.

Blice-Baum's goal for this class is for it to help individuals prevent injury and strengthen themselves.

Liz Stoeckmann, Air Force Network Integration Center strategic communications specialist, said, "If I miss one night of yoga during the week I feel like I'm missing something from my life."
