375th Safety Office hosts motorcycle safety event Published Aug. 16, 2017 By Senior Airman Tristin English 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The 375th Air Mobility Wing Safety Office hosted a Motorcycle Safety Day event on Aug. 11. Those who attended fulfilled the mandatory five year requirement. The event began in Bldg. 859’s auditorium where riders had a general safety brief about dynamics of stopping, high-speed emergency stops, emergency braking, highway hypnosis, fatigue and distracted riding. They also addressed issues with riders updating their Motorcycle Unit Safety Tracking Tool accounts and answered questions or concerns regarding MUSTT. After the safety brief, riders ventured out to the motorcycle range where Scott Air Force Base riding coaches, along with Illinois State Troopers, gave a more in depth motorcycle safety briefing. During that time, the bikes were looked over and judged based on categories that were created. A local motorcycle shop had a booth set up to show off the latest in motorcycle safety gear that included different types of lights and windshields. In preparation for the group rides, the riders were divided into categories based on the rider’s skill and experience. First there was novice, for anyone with under two years riding experience. Then there was intermediate, for those with two to eight years riding experience. Finally, there were the advanced riders with more than eight years riding experience. During the group ride mentors pointed out hazards on the road and used hand signals to let the riders know which side of the road the hazards were on. They also signaled whether to ride staggered or in a single file, and when to slow down. The ride ended at Prairie Du Rocher, Ill., where riders stopped for lunch. They were given the option to stay and eat and then continue on for more practice or head back home.
