Public Notice: Proposed Plan at Installation Restoration Program Site SS034 and Site UK510 Published Jan. 29, 2021 By 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, ILL. -- The United States Air Force invites the public to review and comment on the Proposed Plan (PP) for the preferred alternative and rationale for cleaning up polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)- and pesticide-contaminated soil at Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Site SS034 and PAH- and dieldrin-contaminated soil at IRP Site UK510 at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. A feasibility study (FS) was finalized in January 2021 for SS034 and December 2019 for UK501. Each FS evaluated three similar remedial alternatives. Those alternatives were: no action, land use controls, and excavation with off-site disposal. The SS034 PP and the UK501 PP both recommended excavation with the off-site disposal of contaminated soils. The recommended alternatives were selected over the other alternatives in order to achieve long-term risk reduction by removing soil containing contaminants that exceed the remediation goals. Both recommended alternatives are technically and administratively feasible, protective of human health and the environment, and cost effective. Following implementation, SS034 and UK501 should be eligible for unlimited use/unrestricted exposure (UU/UE) status. The USAF has selected the preferred alternatives for SS034 and UK501 and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency concurs with USAF’s selections. The formal comment period for SS034 and UK501 starts on Feb. 3 and ends on March 5, 2021. Written comments will be accepted at any time during the formal comment periods. Additionally, a public meeting may be held for SS034 or UK501 if requested by the public.
