Portraits of Service

Dan Bowman U.S. Army 6 years of service Specializations: Engineer Equipment Mechanic “The opportunity I had to serve is important to me. I got to learn a trade in the Army and the mechanical aptitude is always a handy thing to have. I was a deputy sheriff for 20 years after I got out of the Army. I volunteered while in the Army, and now I volunteer at the VA a peer specialist. I felt like I needed to give something back because the VA has done a lot for me, and now it’s become a sort of life of service in whatever I’ve done. But I like what I’m doing right now better than anything I’ve ever done in my life. When you’re talking to a homeless veteran that might be struggling with some other issues, and you see a flicker of hope in their eyes that says hey, maybe I don’t have to live like this, it gives you tingles, it really does.” (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Erica Holbert-Siebert)
